Abstract: The chemical characteristics, structure, and physical properties of one of the most important types of lyotropic liquid crystals – chromonic mesophases – are examined. These liquid crystals are formed in solutions of large planar molecules and have a columnar structure. Chromonic mesophases are observed most often in solutions of dyes and medicinal drugs. The formation of mesophases is preceded by the aggregation of the molecules. The characteristics of this process are also examined in the review.
