Abstract: The review surveys and gives a systematic account of the literature data on the IR and UV spectroscopic studies on carbenes in low-temperature matrices. The methods of generation and isolation of carbenes in inert matrices at temperatures around 10 K are examined. The possibility of applying the data obtained to the study of the structure of carbenes and to the determination of the mechanisms of reactions involving them is demonstrated.
