Abstract: The review summarises the achievements in the theory of the equation of state. Novel approaches and new high-precision equations of state for one- and multicomponent fluid systems are consdidered. The results are given for both bulk phases and surface monolayers including two-dimensional equations. In the framework of the theory based on the exclusion factor, a hierarchy of approximations is formulated, incorporating both well-established and relatively new equations of state.
