Abstract: The results of studies on the catalytic carbonylation of organoelemental compounds, organic halides, and other substrates of the type RX, in which X is substituted by CO during the reaction, are analysed. The mechanism of the action of palladium carbonylation catalysts is examined and the principal applications of the substitutional carbonylation reactions in organic synthesis are indicated.
