Abstract: The mechanism of the nitration of aromatic compounds in which the initial stage is the oxidation of the aromatic substrate to the radical-cation is examined. Certain general preconditions, which make such a mechanism feasible, and also the available experimental evidence for its operation are analysed.
The bibliography includes 219 references.
