Trends in the Development and Tasks of Modern Quantum Chemistry

N. D. Sokolov

Institute of Chemical Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow
Abstract: The main advances are surveyed and the principal trends in the development of modern quantum chemistry are noted. The intensification of the linkage between theoretical and experimental research is emphasised. The tasks in various branches of quantum chemistry of greatest current interest are analysed. The electron clouds and the electronic processes in molecules and solids, intermolecular interaction, intramolecular dynamics, elementary processes in gas and condensed phases, and phenomena determined by the non-adiabatic electronic-nuclear interaction are examined. The tasks associated with the development of a theory of the application of physical research methods in chemistry and also those concerned with the applied quantum chemistry, namely theoretical materials science and quantum molecular biology, are discussed. The role of computer modelling is emphasised and the trends in the development of quantum-chemical methods are briefly analysed.
The bibliography includes 269 references.
