Mössbauer Studies of Tunnel Phenomena in Chemical and Biological Physics

Abstract:
The combination of various methods based on the use of the Mössbauer effect, namely the traditional Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy, Mössbauer emission spectroscopy, and the Rayleigh scattering of Mössbauer emission, has made it possible to observe a series of characteristic features of the kinetics of intramolecular oxidation-reduction processes (in relation to the conversion of Turnbull's blue into Prussian blue) and to investigate the dynamic properties of biopolymers over a wide range of temperatures and degrees of hydration. A very important role of tunnel processes was discovered in both cases – the intramolecular tunnel electron transfer (electronic-nuclear tunnelling) and the phonon-stimulated tunnelling of atoms and atomic groups respectively.
