Abstract: The interactions of charged particles with a molecular medium are surveyed and the highly excited molecular states arising under these conditions are discussed. The processes involving the absorption of energy in a condensed phase and the role of collective excitations are considered in detail. The relation between the structure of the track and the characteristics of the radiation-chemical reactions in the tracks of particles of different kinds is analysed.
