Abstract: The use of various physical methods (high resolution electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray radial distribution of atoms, infrared spectroscopy, and the study of the long-range fine structure of X-ray absorption) for the elucidation of the structure of the active component in deposited sulphur catalysts is examined. The data obtained by these methods show that the active component in the catalysts considered has an MoS2 (or WS2) layer structure, while cobalt (or nickel) ions are distributed on the lateral faces of the dispersed sulphide particles.
