Abstract: Data on the methods of synthesis, structure and properties of polycyclic aromatic aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives containing free or substituted hydroxy or oxo group in the peri-position to the carbonyl group are generalized. The attention is focused on the intramolecular interactions between these peri-substituents and heterocyclizations involving them in comparison with heterocyclizations of similar ortho-substituted carbonyl compounds.
