Abstract: The development of theories of the mechanism of the stereospecific polymerisation of α-alkenes and dienes on Ziegler–Natta catalysts has been examined. Theories of the formation and structure of the active centres, the role of the heterogeneous component of the catalyst, the mechanism of chain initiation and growth, and the mechanism of stereoregulation in the polymerisation of alkenes and dienes have been discussed.
