Abstract: Data on the activation of molecular nitrogen on metals and metal nitrides have been analysed and compared with the previously observed regular features of the activation of oxygen on oxide catalysts. The similarity in the mechanisms of the isotopic exchange of O2 and N2 makes it possible to examine from a single viewpoint questions relating to the prediction of catalytic action in reactions involving these molecules.
