Abstract: The stabilisation of disperse systems by the addition of uncharged and partly charged water-soluble polymers is considered. The influence of the adsorbed non-ionic polymers on various components of the interaction energy of the colloidal particles as well as the results of direct measurements of the repulsion forces between the adsorbed macromolecules are analysed. The mechanism of the stabilisation of real dispersions by adsorbed layers of uncharged macromolecular substances is discussed.
