Abstract: The present review is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the changes in the structure and reactivity of solids, brought about by the development of a deformation. It has been shown that the principal regular features of mechanochemical transformations are determined by the extent of the structural disorder, the processes involved in its relaxation with the liberation of stored energy, and the mobility of the atoms. The part played by each of these factors has been examined for mechanically activated chemisorption, the ionisation of structural defects, the production of various non-equilibrium states on relaxation, the excitation of the mobility of the structure with the intensification of diffusion-controlled reactions, etc.
