Abstract: Published data on modification of oxide materials with phosphonic and phosphinic acids and their derivatives are systematised and generalised. The regularities of formation of grafted modifier layers on the oxide surfaces are considered. It is shown that phosphonic acids and their derivatives can form dense well-ordered layers. The factors affecting the properties of such layers are analysed. The key applications of these modifiers are considered.
