Abstract: The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of thermoplastic polymers have been reviewed. The influence of the external medium – inert and chemically active gases – on the rate of thermal decomposition has been discussed. Heat and mass exchange at the surface of a polymer undergoing degradation, and the influence of the rate of heating and the thermal flux power, have been examined.
