Abstract: The mechanism of the hydrochlorination of unsaturated compounds in condensed media is considered on the basis of modern data concerning the kinetics and products of the reaction and also the intermolecular interactions in the reaction system. It is shown that, like other addition processes, hydrochlorination can be carried out in non-polar media at low temperatures without the intermediate formation of ionic species, i.e. via a molecular mechanism. The factors which determine the competition between the ionic and molecular process mechanisms are analysed in detail.
