Abstract: Various methods for the calculation of retention parameters used in gas–liquid chromatography are critically examined in this review. They have been divided into four groups in accordance with their fundamental postulates. Attention has been concentrated on the physicochemical foundations of the methods considered, their generality, and the errors of the calculated quantities.
