Abstract: The results of experimental and theoretical studies are considered and the principles of the stabilisation of non-classical and highly strained polyhedral structures of organic molecules and ions are formulated. The electron count rules regulating the stability of definite polyhedral forms are analysed. The analogy between the electronic structures of organic and organometallic clusters is demonstrated.
