Abstract: This novel type of arenonium ions plays a key role in the isomerisation and electrophilic reactions of aromatic compounds. Methods for their generation, the investigation of their electronic structure by means of fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance, and the influence of structural factors on their relative stability are discussed. Results on the chemical reactions of polyfluorinated arenonium ions, opening up paths for their synthetic use, are summarised. A list of 74 references is included.
