Abstract: Modern ideas concerning the mechanism of electron transfer in photochemical reactions in solution are discussed. The quenching of the excited state via the electron transfer mechanism, the intermediate states and the role of the medium in the formation of radical-ions, the reactivity of excited states in the electron transfer reaction, and the energetics of this reaction are examined.
