Abstract: A systematic account is given of the literature data on the mechanism of the electrophilic halogenation of olefins. Particular attention is devoted to the experimental methods for the investigation of the structures and reactivities of the intermediate unstable adducts produced by the electrophilic addition of the halogen to the multiple bond. The relation between the mechanisms of electrophilic halogenation and other Ad reactions is discussed. Certain aspects of the stereochemistry of the addition of halogens and hypohalites to olefins are examined.
