Abstract: The primary photophysical and photochemical processes in the amide group of polyamides and certain individual amides are examined. The mechanisms of the photolysis and photochemical oxidation of polyamides are analysed as a function of irradiation conditions. The problems of predicting the light stability of polyamides as well as the mechanisms of the stabilisation of polyamides with respect to the action of light and the sensitisation of their photochemical ageing are discussed.
