Abstract: The present state and evolution of the theoretical ideas concerning the steric and electronic structures of silatranes as well as certain characteristics of their reactivity are analysed critically. The decisive influence of the hypervalent X–Si←N bond on the physicochemical and spectroscopic characteristics of silatranes is demonstrated.
