Thermodynamic Treatment of the Polarity and the Selectivity of Sorbents in Gas Chromatography

Abstract:
Existing methods for assessing the polarity and the selectivity of sorbents in gas chromatography are examined. The recently developed thermodynamic treatment of the polarity and the selectivity of stationary phases is shown to have several advantages over the Rohrschneider–McReynolds system. Attention is paid mainly to the quantitative characterisation of the energy of sorbate–sorbent intermolecular interactions on the basis of retention indices. A universal system is proposed for assessing polarity and selectivity in gas chromatography in terms of the energy of intermolecular interaction. A list of 83 references is included.
