Abstract:
The influence of high pressures and temperatures on the structural characteristics of the refractory carbides, nitrides, and monoxides of the transition metals have been examined. The results have been discussed in the light of one of the components of Kurnakov's theory of daltonides and berthollides – the concept of imaginary compounds, developed by Bokii. A number of new ideas following from this examination have been formulated. It has been shown that at high pressures and temperatures it is possible to obtain new electronic modifications of compounds and to extend considerably the range of existence of phases of variable composition. It has been shown that the concept of imaginary compounds is correct, and it has been suggested that a large number of imaginary compounds are realised at high pressures and temperatures. Other methods of obtaining imaginary compounds have been recommended. The bibliography contains 109 references.
