Exciting Developments in the Thermophysics of the Pnictides and Chalcogenides of the Transition Elements
E. F. Westrum Jr University of Michigan, Department of Chemistry, USA
Abstract:
A terse reexamination of the thermophysical aspects of the chemical thermodynamics of the transition element chalcogenides is presented with a view to updating the Grønvold and Westrum approach of 1962. A somewhat more detailed progress report and insight into the situation pertaining to the transition element pnictides is also pursued in order to attain an impression of the similarities and differences between these two important classes of transition element compounds. The increasing availability of high-temperature adiabatic calorimetric data to supplement that obtained by cryogenic calorimetry, a better appreciation of the dilatometric contribution (especially important as higher temperatures are considered), the effect of band structure and related problems are reviewed, and interesting examples of these and other phenomena are presented for a few selected substances including marcasite, cobalt ditelluride, iron diantimonide, chromium diantimonide, chromium monoarsenide, triuranium tetraarsenide and tetraantimonide, uranium diantimonide, diarsenide, and low-digenite (Cu1.80S). The bibliography includes 90 references.
