Abstract: Data on the catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds in acid media are examined and discussed. A new method of catalytic hydrogenation in acid media, in which the catalyst activates hydrogen and the substrate is activated by the acid which converts it into a positively charged intermediate, is proposed. The role of catalysts as agents transferring hydride ions from molecular hydrogen to carbonium ions is considered.
