Abstract: Problems associated with the application of photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) in the study of catalysis and adsorption are examined, the physical principles of PES and the experimental technique are briefly described, and an account is given of the results of the application of the method to the study of metallic, alloy, oxide, deposited, and zeolite catalysts. It is shown that the method can be used successfully to investigate the valence and physical states and the surface concentrations of elements in catalysts, the nature of the adsorption complexes, and the mechanism of surface reactions.
