Abstract: The methods of preparation, structure, and properties of the coloured products formed in the Janovsky reaction of aromatic polynitro-compounds with acetone and other ketones in an alkaline medium as well as the analogous complexes with other compounds containing mobile hydrogen atoms are examined and the existing ideas about the mechanism of the Janovsky reaction and further transformations of the σ-complexes are discussed.
