Abstract: The results of studies on the steric and electronic structures of unsaturated organophosphorus compounds with a four-coordinated phosphorus atom by the dipole moment method are surveyed. The polarity of the C–P bonds is analysed and the problems of conjugation and unsaturation in organophosphorus compounds are discussed. The orientation of the double bond and the conformation of the aryl groups attached to the phosphorus atom are examined. Data are presented on the conformational analysis of unsaturated organophosphorus compounds.
