Abstract: The characteristics of chemical reactions under the influence of infrared radiation and the conditions under which they occur in the absence of equilibrium between the vibrational and other degrees of freedom of the reacting species are examined. Studies on isotopically selective reactions, on the role of various types of energy (namely vibrational and translational energy), and on the overcoming of the activation barrier in chemical reactions are analysed.
