Abstract: We review recent work in the Soviet Union and abroad on the chemistry and technology of technetium which allows the properties of this element to be discussed in the light of Mendeleev's Periodic Law. A section outlining the history of the discovery of technetium is included because of the many inaccuracies in the published accounts of the search for this element. 129 references.
