Abstract: The structure and the physical and physicochemical properties are discussed, with special attention paid to the relation between the chemical structure and the properties of the mesogens. The influence of external factors on liquid-crystalline phases is examined. Various fields of application of liquid crystals are reported, and requirements to be met by such materials are formulated. A list of 210 references is included.
