Abstract: Various views on the nature of the dissolution process are examined and the latter is explained as a consequence of the solvation of the solute. Methods for the determination of solvation numbers and solvating capacities of solvents are analysed and an attempt is made to explain solvation and the influence of the nature of the solvent on complex formation reactions taking into account modern ideas about chemical bonding. The fundamental characteristics of complex formation and inorganic synthesis in nonaqueous and mixed solutions are described.
