Abstract: The most important published data on the composition and structure of aluminate ions in solutions of different concentrations and pH values are systematised and analysed. The views of various workers on the types of interaction present in aluminate solutions are discussed. The significance of different hypotheses and models of mononuclear and polynuclear aluminate ions is examined in the light of the results of recent physicochemical investigations.
