Abstract: Investigations on the alkaline and oxidative-alkaline degradation of cellulose by molecular oxygen are reviewed, and the reaction mechanisms are surveyed. The effect of the supermolecular structure of cellulose on the rates of these processes is examined. A list of 136 references is included.
