Abstract: The available literature data for the protonation of complexones and the formation of their complexes with diamagnetic and paramagnetic ions are reviewed. A systematic and general account is given of studies on the equilibria and kinetics of complex formation and of the structures of the complexes. Typical PMR spectra of complexones and their metal complexes are presented; quantitative characteristics obtained from PMR data (chemical shifts, spin–spin coupling constants, stability constants, and reaction rate constants) are tabulated.
