Abstract: This review attempts to generalise a method of evaluating the contributions to the heat of formation of hydrocarbons and their halogen derivatives based on modern views on the structure of the carbon atom. This approach throws new light on the mechanism of a number of reactions, and on the nature of the activation energy of these processes.
