Abstract: The application of the metal–semiconductor boundary layer theory to the study of the catalytic properties of supported metal catalysts is discussed. Published work on the structure of very small metal crystals and on anomalous adsorption and catalytic centres in such crystals is discussed with particular reference to the dependence of catalytic activity on the state of dispersion of the metal deposit.
