Abstract: The chemical consequences of the mechanical treatment of inorganic solids has recently become the subject of detailed studies arising from increasing mechanical loading and the development of a highly effective technology of size reduction. The present review of published data examines the influence of mechanical treatment on the structural and thermodynamic properties of materials, the reactivities of substances, and the rates of physicochemical and chemical processes involving substances subjected to mechanical treatment. The possible mechanisms and characteristic features of mechanochemical processes are discussed, and routes to their practical utilisation are indicated.
