Mechanisms of the Hydroxylation of Aromatic Compounds
D. I. Metelitsa Institute of Chemical Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow
Abstract:
A systematic account is given of various mechanisms for the hydroxylation of aromatic compounds in the liquid phase, and they are discussed critically. Similarities and differences are emphasised in the mechanisms of the action of Fenton's reagent, enzymes, and models of the latter in the hydroxylation of aromatic systems. Mechanisms of radiolytic hydroxylation are examined in detail, and questions concerning the nature of the attacking species and the distribution of the resulting isomeric phenols are discussed. Kinetic data and the mechanism of the hydroxylation of aromatic systems during oxidation together with aliphatic alcohols are examined in detail. A list of 211 references is included.
