Surface Layer Sorbents in Gas Chromatography

A. V. Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow
Abstract: The methods of preparation, chromatographic properties, and applications of surface layer sorbents have been examined. Chromatographic columns with surface layer sorbents are characterised by a low value of HEPT (0.4–0.5 mm) and a weak dependence of HETP on the flow rate of the carrier gas and the grain diameter of the solid carrier. Compared with the usual (bulk phase) sorbents, the use of sorbents of this new type makes it possible to shorten the duration of analysis by a factor of 3–15, to decrease the experimental temperature by 30–100 deg, and to extend the range of compounds susceptible to analysis.
