Abstract: The relation between the ionisation potentials of aromatic and heterocyclic compounds and their electronic structures is considered. The nature of the orbitals in the ground states of molecules of different structures is examined on the basis of an analysis of the ionisation potentials. It has been shown how substituents affect the positions of the electronic levels of aromatic compounds.
