The Chemistry of Quinuclidine
L. N. Yakhontov All-Union Scientific Research Chemical-Pharmaceutical Institute, Moscow
Abstract:
The review deals with the chemical properties and the biological activity of the derivatives of 1-azabicyclo[2,2,2]octane widely known as quinuclidine. The work of the Soviet School of Chemists, founded by M. V. Rubtsov, in the field of quinuclidine derivatives is reviewed in detail. In the review an attempt is made in the first place to examine as a whole the chemistry and the biological action of quinuclidine derivatives from the standpoint of the characteristics of the structure of the quinuclidine molecule. The description of the methods of synthesis of various quinuclidine derivatives features prominently in the review. These data are presented with separate discussion of the methods of synthesising the bicyclic quinuclidine system and the methods for the introduction of various substituents into the preformed quinuclidine ring. This system made it possible to give a general account of the abundant factual data which have accumulated so far on the synthesis of quinuclidine derivatives and to emphasise the characteristics of the synthetic studies on this class of substances. A special section deals with the comparatively new reactions involving the expansion of the quinuclidine ring. The bibliography comprises 227 references.
