Progress in the Synthesis of Perfumes Based on Pinenes
Y. -R. Naves The Company "Givaudan", Switzerland
Abstract:
Turpentine was known in far antiquity. As is well known, it was obtained by steam distillation of various types of pine. Rosin and resins are obtained simultaneously. All these products were used in the construction of ships. Turpentine was first produced in the XVIth century in North America, where there were vast areas of pine forests in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia and where there was a market for these products, and they became widespread in the XVIIth century. The use of turpentine for the production of varnishes, paints, etc. began about 1830–1840. There is a bibliography of 119 references.
