Abstract: The relationship between the composition, structure and properties of promising thermoelectric materials is analysed. Different classes of chemical compounds that serve the basis for the development of thermoelectrics are considered. Special attention is drawn to chemical problems associated with the design of the new-generation thermoelectric materials. The prospects for the development of this research field are demonstrated.
