Abstract: The review deals with the methods of synthesis of deuterium-labelled hydrophobic and hydrophilic synthons of lipid molecules and the routes to selectively and perdeuterated phospholipids and their analogues. Deuterium-labelled lipids are used to study the structural organisation and functioning of biological membranes including NMR studies and neutron diffraction of lipid–lipid and lipid–protein interactions. The bibliography includes 145 references.
