Abstract: Literature data on the chemistry of the adsorption of sulfur dioxide on carbon adsorbents are surveyed and described systematically. The influence of various factors (the nature of the carbon matrix, the activation method, the chemistry of the adsorbent surfaces, temperature, the composition of the gas stream, etc.) on the sorption of SO2 by activated carbons and semicokes is examined. The possible ways in which sulfur dioxide interacts with the carbon surface are discussed. The bibliography includes 128 references.
