Abstract: The methods of synthesis and properties of samarium diiodide are examined and the results of its employment for the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds are surveyed. New reactions involving samarium diiodide are described and the prospects for its applications in polymer chemistry are indicated. The bibliography includes 87 references.
